The QEHC's team of leading radiologists and technologists specialize in medical imaging procedures like mammogram ensuring that examinations are expertly conducted and interpreted in compliance with the highest standards. Patients benefit from rapid reporting, with results sent directly to their referring physician.
All mammography exams require a physician's referral OR a letter from the PQDCS ( Quebec Breast Cancer Screening Program), which is sent to all women as they reach 50 years of age.
Mammograms are recognized as safe and reliable tests using low-dose X-rays as a way of detecting early breast cancer in women without symptoms, and to detect abnormalities and diagnose breast cancer in women experiencing symptoms.
The earlier cancer is detected, the more treatment options are available and the better the outcome. Mammography can detect a lump as early as two years before it can be felt.
We have state-of-the art full field DR digital mammography which emits significantly less radiation than traditional mammography and provides more accurate results.
There are 2 types of mammography:
Screening mammography is a medical exam that aims to detect breast cancer in women who do not show any signs of breast cancer or breast-related ailments. This test involves examining both breasts to identify any lumps or abnormal areas of breast tissue that may not be noticeable by touch. By periodically conducting screening mammography, healthcare professionals can track changes in breast tissue and potentially identify breast cancer at an early stage.
Diagnostic mammography is a medical examination that is carried out to diagnose breast-related problems, such as lumps or suspicious areas. The problem may come to your attention, or it may be discovered during a clinical breast examination or screening mammography. Unlike screening mammography, diagnostic mammography is a more time-consuming process that involves capturing detailed images of the breast from various angles. This is done to closely examine a particular area of the breast that has raised suspicion. Diagnostic mammography is generally performed on both breasts to enable doctors to compare the breast tissue of each breast.
The QEHC’s CURE Foundation Breast Health Center, has been through the rigorous mammography accreditation process that allows us to have the status of an official Accredited Breast Cancer Detection Center.
In 2018, the QEHC began using 3D technology for mammograms known as Tomosynthesis in its breast exams. This technology enables early detection of smaller invasive cancers and a reduction in recalls for additional views. Tomosynthesis improves patient care, translating into a higher probability of a successful outcome of a breast cancer diagnosis.
The PQDCS ( Quebec breast cancer screening program) invites all women aged 50 to 69 to take advantage of this test every two years. It has been confirmed by numerous scientific studies and the direct results of the PQDCS that women in this age group who take part in screening are at a lower risk of dying from breast cancer.
Patients who have received a letter from the PQDCS please ensure to have this document at the time of the appointment.
The mammography technician positions the breast on a platform and gently compresses it. Compression is used so that small abnormalities are not obscured by overlapping breast tissue and allows for the use of lower X-ray doses to improve the accuracy of the imaging.
The exam takes approximately 15 minutes, and no side-effects should be experienced.
