Grief and Bereavement Therapy

I am a clinical psychologist since 1998 and a member of the Order of the Psychologists of Quebec (OPQ).

My first orientation is psychodynamic. It means together with my patient we try to understand his/her own specific psychological organization research. We give it meaning and this awareness quickly triggers change and better well-being. It is an existential therapy too.

Being certified in EMDR I also help my patients with this method especially in case of grief, trauma, PTSD, abuse (past or present), anxiety and depression.

Issues met are of course very different based on their history and resources:

- Mood disorders (depression, irritability...)

- Anxiety disorders (bullying, burn-out, general anxiety, fears, intrusive thoughts, compulsions...)

-suicidal ideations

-abuse (sexual, physical or psychological)

-attention deficit

-Life changes (moves, expatriation, migration, illness, new child...)

I am also certified in Gottman Couples Therapy. Gottman Couples Therapy is based on John Gottman's 40 years of research on relationships. The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect, and affection, remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy in conflicting situations, and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

Couples who enter into Gottman Method Couples Therapy begin with an assessment process that then informs the therapeutic framework and intervention.

A conjoint session, followed by individual interviews with each partner are conducted. Couples complete questionnaires and then receive detailed feedback on their relationship.

The couple and therapist decide on the frequency and duration of the sessions.

Interventions are designed to help couples strengthen their relationships in three primary areas: friendship, conflict management, and the reaction of shared meaning. Couples learn to replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions and to repair past hurts. Interventions designed to increase closeness and intimacy are used to improve friendship, deepen emotional connection, and create changes which enhances the couples shared goals. Relapse prevention is also addressed.

Couples who come to me (homo and heterosexuals) suffer generally from:

- Emotional disconnection

- Infidelity

- Grief

- Perpetual conflicts

- Past or present abuse

- A lack of shared meaning

- A different vision about money

- Different expectations about sex.

I practice in English, French and can also talk in German .

I am a psychologist and a psychoanalyst with over 25 years of experience. I work with individuals, couples, and families.

My approach is to help the client explore their current difficulties and symptoms in the light of their present-day situation and their formative year. I believe the childhood experiences are registered in the unconscious mind and are carried forward in the form of emotional and bodily memory. This emotional and bodily memory is an unconscious force, which can have powerful effects on the client’s behavior and relationships if it not well understood. My aim in therapy is to help the client discover and understand their unconscious mind. The client will then have conscious choices, to feel, think and act differently than their previous automatic ways of being and suffering.

Similarly, with couples and families, I try to help them to untangle dysfunctional patterns of relating. I work with couples and families to help them understand how they got to their present situation and how to develop new approaches of relating. If you think that you might like to work with me, please give me a call. I would be happy to let you know whether I could be of help.

I have a general practice in which I work with individuals, couples, children, and families. My work involves dealing with issues such as depression and anxiety; relationships (intimacy, interpersonal, workplace); divorce; self-esteem; performance and achievement; trauma; grief and loss; aging; conflicts and challenges with children; and many other issues.

In addiction, I have extensive experience with twelve-step programs; addiction and dependency recovery; and emotional, eating, and sexual disorders.

I have been in private practice for many years. I completed six years of postgraduate training in Marital and Family Therapy, and in Individual Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Argyle Institute of Human Relations of which I am an active associate.

While bringing a fresh, empathic, and creative attitude to helping individuals define and reach their goals, I carefully adjust my approach to meet their particular needs.

(514) 791-3538

Office Hours: By appointment

I work with individuals, couples and families experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, relational problems, stress management, and grief. I create a warm, confidential space where people can feel safe to explore their struggles, discover their strengths and ultimately find more satisfying ways of living.

I have also worked as a music therapist in Palliative Care at the McGill University Health Centre since 1984, and have extensive experience with loss, bereavement, and adjustment to illness. My therapeutic approach is steeped in compassion and creativity.

My orientation is primarily psychodynamic, but I also integrate a systemic approach and cognitive strategies where helpful. I believe that we can gain the freedom to make healthier life choices by becoming conscious of old patterns that no longer work for us, and by actively working through the feelings and beliefs associated with them. I truly believe in our capacity to grow and change.

My post-graduate training is in Individual Psychotherapy (Argyle Institute; Jewish General Hospital’s Institute for Community and Family Psychiatry); and in Marriage and Family Therapy (Argyle Institute).

Many private insurance companies cover my services as a Psychotherapist (permit from the OPQ), and as a Marriage and Family Therapist (member of the OTSTCFQ).

I work with individuals experiencing a wide range of difficulties.  These include anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship issues (love/intimacy, work, family), life transitions (separation, divorce, mid-life), performance issues (school, work), identity issues, trauma, and grief. My approach, while primarily psychodynamic, includes cognitive strategies and active, creative strategies.

It can take courage to seek help and to face one’s problems.  I bring warmth, compassion, sensitivity, and respect for my work, creating a safe, confidential and non-judgmental environment for the exploration and working through of issues.

A strong belief in the mind-body connection informs my approach.  Giving clients tools for managing and reducing stress, and increasing feelings of well-being can often be of significant help in terms of coping with whatever challenges are occurring.  Physical symptoms can offer clues to feel we may not be aware of, or of ways of functioning that no longer serve us.

My post-graduate training in psychotherapy took place at the Institute for Expressive Analysis in New York City.  I have been in practice for 25 years, am licensed by the Ordre of Psychologists in Quebec, and am a member of the Quebec Society for Professional Psychotherapists (Société québécoise des psychothérapeutes professionals).

Music Psychotherapy

Music Psychotherapy combines talk therapy with the therapeutic power of music.  This approach is ideal for individuals who want a more creative approach to psychotherapy. You do not need to be a musician or have any previous experience with music, in order to be able to fully engage in and benefit from music psychotherapy.  Musical portions of sessions can take a variety of forms, including music listening, improvisation, imaging to music, singing, sounding, toning and song-writing.  Not every session will involve music, just as some sessions would be focused exclusively on musical expression/experiencing, and some sessions include a combination of both talking and musical expression/experiencing.

Music Psychotherapy is recommended for:

-Individuals seeking a more creative approach to psychotherapy in which non-verbal expression through the arts is included

-Individuals with trauma

-Individuals for whom talk therapy alone has not worked

-Individuals with unexplained somatic symptoms

I received an M.A. in Music Therapy from New York University and am a fully accredited music therapist (M.T.A.) and a member of the Canadian Association for Music Therapy and the Quebec Association for Music Therapists (Association québécoise des musicothérapeutes).
