Types of imaging

The Queen Elizabeth Health Complex Diagnostic Imaging Centre (Radiology/X-ray) is located on the main floor of the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex.

The Digital Imaging Center is fully digitized with state-of-the-art equipment and uses the expertise of a group of highly qualified radiologists to provide clients with accurate and up to date diagnostic imaging.

The Digital Imaging Center offers a variety of exams:

GENERAL X-RAY

The QEHC employs digital X-ray technology to deliver accurate and timely evaluations. An X-ray is a quick, painless exam that produces images of the body. It helps detect medical conditions in the head, spine, chest, abdomen and bones.

BONE DENSITY

Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) is a simple, non-invasive and painless procedure that uses very small amounts of X-ray to detect weakened bone density, or osteoporosis. BMD scanning is important because osteoporosis affects 1 in 4 women after menopause and 1 in 8 men, and bone loss occurs without symptoms. At least 80% of fractures in people over 60 are related to osteoporosis.

ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that bounce off tissues and organs to form a multi-dimensional image to help detect diseases and damaged tissue, locate abnormal growths, and detect a range of other health conditions.

DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY (DR system)

The QEHC’s Cure Foundation Breast Health Center is one of 15 accredited breast cancer detection centers in Montreal, QEHC have state-of-the art full field DR digital mammography which emits significantly less radiation than traditional mammography and provides more accurate results.

Mammogram are recognized as safe and reliable tests using low-dose X-rays as a way of detecting early breast cancer in women without symptoms, and to detect abnormalities and diagnose breast cancer in women experiencing symptoms.

FLUOROSCOPY

Fluoroscopy is an imaging technique that uses X-rays to obtain real-time moving images of the internal structures of a patient. As a tool, it can be used to examine the skeletal, digestive, urinary, respiratory, muscular and reproductive systems. At the QEHC, studies include Barium Swallows, Upper G.I. Series, as well as Arthrography (the study of joints). Fluoroscopy can be used to examine the digestive system using a substance which is opaque to X-rays which is introduced into the digestive system. Other exams may involve injection of a contrast substance.
