Mammography training

We typically assume that one mammogram is the same as the next. Although the technology may be the same, one study published on August 24, 2016 in the publication Academic Radiology, indicated that extensive continuing education for technicians has a big impact on the successful detection of breast cancer. The relationship between continuing education and successful detection stemmed from higher positioning quality. Essentially, the better the equipment’s positioning, the higher the quality of the image, which then makes detection easier.

Quebec has a mandated 7 hours of positioning training for practicing technicians. The study found that technicians with more than 15 hours of training performed statistically better than those with under 15 hours of hands on positioning training. Ultimately, the study concluded that additional training “appears to offer one of the best approaches to improve mammography positioning quality.” (Source:

At the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex, we are firm believers in the notion that technology needs to go hand in hand with a well-trained team. We pride ourselves on the continuing education programs for our technicians, practitioners and support staff. Our team interfaces directly with the treating physicians and that is a responsibility that we do not take lightly.

General Information for Mammograms:

Generally, mammograms should be performed every two years for the best chances of breast cancer detection. Although most commonly associated with breast cancer detection, mammograms can detect other deformities or problems within the breast. Ultrasounds can be used after mammograms to delve further into the findings of the initial examination to determine if further intervention is required.

At the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex the cost of a mammogram is covered by the RAMQ.
