Update on ultrasound

Ultrasounds are extremely innovative in the field of technology. They have been used to advance many medical fields as well as other forms of technology not even related to the medical field. For example, in the field of airlines, ultrasounds have been used to improve detection technology to help identify required repairs and fatigue cracks underneath doublers. Ultrasound technology is used all over the world to improve health and safety for everyone.

In the human body ultrasounds are designed to detect diseases, damaged tissue, abnormal growths and a large range of other health conditions. An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that bounce off of tissues and organs to create a multi-dimensional image.

Most of the types of ultrasounds that we see today are 2D. 2-dimensional ultrasounds are the work horses in the health industry. They allow the health providers to examine the:

  • Thyroid
  • Eyes
  • Blood vessels
  • Spleen
  • Pancreas
  • Kidneys
  • Liver
  • Ovaries
  • Testicles
  • Uterus
  • Gallbladder

As is usually the case with the sciences, the technology continues to develop by leaps and bounds. Lately, we have started to see the introduction of 3-dimensional and even “4-dimensional” ultrasounds that allow for a different perspective.

3-dimensional ultrasounds use a different sound wave process from 2D ultrasounds. These sound waves are sent at various angles and then echo back to an enhanced software that is used to create a very life like image of either a fetus or internal organ. 3D ultrasounds and 4D ultrasounds are usually used in researching fetal development and anomalies. 4D ultrasounds are more focused on the time. In general, there is a delay as the information is sent back to the computer and the image is created during a 3D ultrasound. 4D aims to eliminate that time delay so that the image can be viewed in a real time manner and yet still retain the details of a 3D image.

Currently, ultrasounds are not covered by the RAMQ but may be partially covered by private health insurance.
